What Supplements Actually Help Adult Skaters' Joints

Patients ask me about joint supplements more than almost anything else. As a physiotherapist who also skates several times a week in my 50s, I’ve got both the clinical view and the personal one, and they mostly agree: supplements are a small piece of the picture, not the piece. Gear, technique, and how you load your joints matter more. But the small piece is still worth understanding properly, because a lot of what’s marketed to active adults is hype.
Here’s what the evidence actually supports, and what to skip.
Set your expectations first
No supplement rebuilds cartilage or reverses joint wear in any dramatic way. What the better-supported options offer is modest — reduced stiffness, marginally less discomfort after activity, some support for connective tissue over time. If something promises fast, dramatic joint repair, that claim alone is a reason to be skeptical.
Give anything you try a real trial period — most of what has research support takes eight to twelve weeks of consistent use before you’d expect to notice a difference. Judging a supplement after a week or two isn’t a fair test of it.
Glucosamine and chondroitin: modest, mixed evidence
This is the most studied combination in the joint-supplement world, and the research is genuinely mixed. Some trials show a modest reduction in osteoarthritis-related joint pain, particularly in the knee; others show no meaningful difference from placebo. The honest summary is that it works for some people and not others, the effect size when it does work is small, and it’s not going to be a game-changer.
It’s low-risk for most healthy adults, which is part of why it remains popular despite unclear evidence. If you try it, that eight-to-twelve-week window is the right test — and if you’re not noticing a difference by then, it’s reasonable to stop.
Collagen: reasonable evidence for connective tissue
Collagen supplementation, particularly hydrolyzed collagen peptides, has better emerging evidence than glucosamine for supporting tendon and ligament health specifically — relevant to skaters given how much repetitive stress skating puts through ankles, knees, and wrists. Some research suggests taking it alongside vitamin C, which supports the body’s own collagen synthesis, may improve the effect.
This is one of the more promising options for an active adult population, though it’s still an emerging area rather than settled science.
Omega-3s: solid general evidence, indirect benefit for joints
Omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oil or algae-based supplements) have strong evidence for reducing systemic inflammation generally. For joints specifically, the benefit is more indirect — less overall inflammatory load in the body can mean less stiffness and discomfort, particularly for people who run inflamed from other causes (diet, poor sleep, other health conditions).
If you already eat oily fish regularly, you may be getting enough. If you don’t, this is one of the more broadly evidence-backed additions to consider, separate from its joint-specific effects.
Turmeric and curcumin: promising, but check the formulation
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has real anti-inflammatory research behind it. The catch is bioavailability — curcumin on its own is poorly absorbed by the body. Formulations that pair it with black pepper extract (piperine) or use a bioavailability-enhanced form absorb dramatically better than plain turmeric powder or cheap capsules.
That better absorption isn’t a free upgrade, though. Piperine can change how your body processes a range of common medications, and high-bioavailability curcumin has been linked to rare but serious liver injury in case reports. If you’re on any regular medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding an enhanced-absorption curcumin product specifically — and stop and see a doctor if you notice symptoms like unusual fatigue, yellowing skin or eyes, or dark urine after starting one.
What’s mostly hype
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is common in joint blends with thin evidence behind it on its own — it’s often included more because it’s cheap to add than because the research supports it strongly. Proprietary “joint formula” blends that combine a dozen ingredients in small, unlisted doses are usually more marketing than substance; you generally can’t tell whether any single ingredient is present in an amount that matches what was actually studied.
If a product promises overnight relief or dramatic reversal of joint wear, treat that as a red flag regardless of what’s in it.
What matters more than any supplement
Before spending money on joint supplements, the higher-leverage moves are the ones covered elsewhere on this site: softer wheels for rough surfaces, proper footwear with real cushioning, and strength work — particularly for the muscles around your knees and hips — that reduces the load your joints absorb in the first place. Supplements support a system that’s already being managed well through gear, technique, and recovery. They don’t substitute for it.
A note on medications and conditions
If you’re on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, or manage any chronic condition, talk to your doctor before starting fish oil, turmeric, or any new supplement — some interact with medications in ways worth checking first. This is a five-minute conversation that’s worth having before you start, not after something goes wrong.
The realistic version of this: pick one or two options with decent evidence, give them a real trial period, and don’t expect them to do the work that gear and training are actually responsible for.
