Why Skateboarding Is the Best Balance Training After 40
Physiotherapist and skater. Came back to skating at 49 and hasn't stopped.
As a physiotherapist, I spent years recommending balance training to patients in their 40s and 50s. Standing on one leg. Wobble boards. Stepping exercises. All effective. All tedious enough that most people stopped doing them within a month.
When I came back to skating at 49, I realised I’d been prescribing balance training for decades while overlooking the most effective delivery mechanism I knew: a skateboard.
The Research on Balance Training and Fall Prevention
A 2026 systematic review analysed the effectiveness of balance-based exercise interventions for fall prevention in community-dwelling adults. The headline finding: consistent balance training can reduce fall incidence by up to 50% in adults over 40.
This is a significant number. Falls are the leading cause of injury in adults over 50 — not because individual falls are more dangerous (though they can be), but because fall frequency is high and the consequences accumulate. A hip fracture, a wrist fracture, a knock to the head: at 55, these carry real costs in recovery time and long-term function.
The research consistently identifies balance training as one of the most effective preventive interventions. The problem has always been adherence — people don’t stick to balance exercises because balance exercises, in isolation, are not interesting.
What Makes Skateboarding Different
Skating is what exercise scientists call “perturbation-based balance training.” Every session involves repeated, unpredictable disruptions to your centre of gravity — wheel catching a crack, terrain changing, speed fluctuating — that your body has to respond to in real time.
This is different from static balance exercises (standing on one leg) or predictable dynamic exercises (walking on a balance beam). Perturbation-based training specifically develops reactive balance — the ability to recover from an unexpected disturbance. This is what actually prevents falls in real life.
A 2025 meta-analysis of perturbation-based balance training found it was significantly more effective at reducing real-world falls than static balance training. The explanation is specificity: falls happen because of unexpected disturbances. Training with unexpected disturbances improves fall recovery.
Every skating session is perturbation training. You don’t have to think of it that way. You’re just skating.
The Specific Balance Demands of Skating
Skating develops several distinct aspects of balance that transfer to everyday movement:
Ankle stability. The constant micro-adjustments that skating requires build ankle strength and proprioception — your body’s sense of where your ankle is and how much force it’s exerting. This is the primary mechanism by which skating prevents falls.
Core activation. Maintaining posture on a moving board requires constant low-level core muscle engagement. Not the high-effort contraction of a plank, but the postural activation that stabilises your spine and pelvis. This is what physiotherapists try to train with Swiss balls and wobble boards — skating trains it automatically.
Hip strength and stability. Carving and turning load the hip abductors (the muscles on the outside of your hip) in ways that sitting, walking, and even running don’t. Hip abductor weakness is one of the main contributors to age-related balance decline.
Dual-task processing. Skating while navigating an environment — reading the terrain ahead, aware of other park users, judging your speed — trains the divided-attention aspect of balance that’s particularly relevant to fall prevention. Most balance exercises are single-task; real-world fall risk is mostly dual-task.
The Cardiovascular Benefit Is Real Too
Balance training alone is valuable. But the NIH tracking data on adult skaters is worth noting here: average heart rate across sessions is 138 bpm, with 70% of session time at moderate or vigorous intensity.
For adults in their 40s and 50s, this is a meaningful cardiovascular workout. Cardiovascular fitness and balance are independently important for healthy aging — skating provides both simultaneously, in a single session that people actually enjoy and sustain.
Starting With Safety, Not Spite
The obvious counter-argument to “skating trains balance” is “skating also causes falls.” This is true, and it’s worth addressing directly.
Adult skating injuries most commonly involve wrists, not hips or heads. Wrist fractures from instinctive hand-catching — the reflex response to an unexpected fall. Wrist guards effectively prevent this injury. They are not optional if you’re skating regularly.
Beyond wrist guards, the risk of skating is closely tied to how you skate, not whether you skate:
- Smooth concrete surfaces at skateparks are substantially safer than rough outdoor pavement
- Skating at your actual skill level, not beyond it, dramatically reduces fall frequency
- Helmet use prevents the most serious consequence of falls
The risk calculus changes when you account for the baseline risk of not training balance. Adults who do no balance-challenging activity in their 40s and 50s experience predictable decline in proprioception, ankle stability, and reactive balance — which means more falls in their 60s and beyond. Skating, with appropriate protective equipment, trades a known and manageable short-term risk for a meaningful reduction in longer-term risk.
What This Means Practically
You do not need to approach skating as balance training. That framing will make it feel like an obligation.
What I’d suggest instead: skate because it’s worth doing on its own terms. Note that as a side effect, you’re doing something that physios prescribe and patients struggle to maintain — reactive balance training, several times a week, for as long as skating remains enjoyable.
The physios are right about balance training. They just haven’t been recommending the most effective version of it.
