Terrain & Features
A 20,000-square-foot Spohn Ranch poured-concrete public skatepark on Newport's North End open daily from 4:30am to 9pm, built with a dedicated beginner mini-bowl, gentle banks, and a perimeter flow loop separated from its deep pool-coped bowl.
Located in the John H. Chafee Boulevard recreation complex near Connell Highway and across from the Community College of Rhode Island’s Newport campus, Newport Skatepark is a roughly 20,000-square-foot poured-concrete facility spearheaded by the Friends of Newport Skatepark and designed and built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks. Opened in late 2024 with daily operating hours starting at 4:30am, the park was explicitly engineered for multi-generational progression—giving older skaters on Aquidneck Island both physical ability separation and quiet early-morning windows before school and coastal tourist traffic build.
Returning riders can start on the wide, smooth perimeter pathways, gentle banks, low street ledges, and a dedicated smaller beginner mini-bowl before working up to the tabletops, jersey barrier, the northwest corner’s slanted “taco” quarter-pipe with a ride-on rail, or the deep bowl finished with pool coping. Keep an important lighting caveat in mind: although underground electrical conduits were installed during construction for future permanent LED sports lighting, temporary portable lights were removed under municipal regulations, so the park currently lacks active night floodlights—plan sessions for daylight hours within the 4:30am-to-9:00pm window, and expect shared all-wheels traffic (skateboards, BMX, and scooters) on sunny afternoons. For floodlit evening concrete across Narragansett Bay, pair a session here with Old Mountain Field Skate Park in Wakefield or head north to Neutaconkanut Skatepark in Providence.
